Tomothy the Thankful Thurkey

It’s November — are you feeling the pull toward gratitude everywhere you look, too?

In my childhood, I only specifically remember talking about gratitude at our Thanksgiving dinners. We’d go around the table (sometimes just once, sometimes many times) and each share something we were thankful for. Nothing wrong with that tradition, but I like what my husband’s family did more, so we adopted their tradition!

Russ grew up putting thankful feathers on Gordon the Gratitude Gobbler each November. We carried on the tradition starting in our first year of marriage, with our own Tomothy the Thankful Thurkey (yes, with a ‘th’ 🤣).

He has a big, round body, a 3-D head, and googly eyes, and I just think he’s so cute and clever :) We write things we’re thankful for on each feather and put them up all month long. It’s a fun way to work on teaching our kids gratitude! Plus Ada LOVES putting up feathers. She says Tomothy is her favorite Thanksgiving tradition (it’s really the only super concrete tradition we have with Thanksgiving, but still!).

I love to hear what Ada (5) comes up with. Last year she drew pictures on her feathers, and this year she’s writing the words (with assistance in spelling). Maybe next year she’ll be writing feathers all on her own! Holly (almost 2) is even adding some scribbles this year, as well.

I’ve been sharing a few of my gratitude feathers over on Instagram as well — each day I share one thing I’m thankful for and ask all of you what you’re thankful for, too. I’m enjoying gathering in gratitude, so I’d love to have you join in with me!

How does your family focus on gratitude in November? I’d love to hear your family traditions! :)
