We’ve been doing family costumes for quite a while now, but having kids with opinions makes it trickier because I want my kids to enjoy what we choose! In the few months leading up to Halloween, Ada kept throwing out different ideas of who we could be, but nothing really stuck for a while. It wasn’t like last year when there was a clear choice because Ada had a certain obsession.
Finally, we narrowed it down to Bluey because we all enjoy that show, and we have the perfect family for it right now — mom, dad, and two girls! If you haven’t seen Bluey yet, it’s on Disney+ and it is such a great show — it teaches great lessons like Daniel Tiger, but is cuter/funnier/more entertaining. It’s entertainment for the whole family!
Anyway, we waited too long in indecision — the costumes were expensive, so they sat in my Amazon cart for a few days before they sold out completely and were no longer an option. At that point we decided we’d be Frozen characters (hello pregnant Olaf belly!). But then, my sister-in-law reminded me that her friends were Bluey characters last year for Halloween, and the mom had MADE hats for each character — it was just what we needed to make homemade costumes recognizable. We were back on the Bluey track!
Once we had hats, all we needed were pajama sets and various colors of felt to make the tummies. It was a quick and easy process, though overall it probably turned out to be just about as expensive as buying the costumes I avoided in the beginning 🤦🏼♀️ At least it turned out cute, though, right? Right?? 🤣 Plus, we made a super cute video copying the Bluey intro.
One thing I love about these costumes is that they’re perfect for chilly Halloween trick-or-treating! We all wore wool clothes underneath our costumes and you could barely tell. If I’d been more on top of things, I could have also gotten gloves in the right colors to be our hands! As it was, our clothes kept us warm enough until the last 20 minutes or so, when we did add gloves and coats.
We trick or treated a bit on our own, then met up with our best-friend-family and continued on with them. Funny enough, they were ALSO Bluey this Halloween, which was kind of fun for the kids. My favorite thing was how Holly currently says trick or treat — “frick or freat!” 🤣 After trick or treating, we wrapped up the night with a few candy bars and a quick bedtime (a cranky one for Holly!!).
Then Russ and I watched the new Hocus Pocus 2 for the first time! I had heard only bad things about it, so I was actually pleasantly surprised! I love a good backstory 😏 It’ll be nice to have two Hocus Pocus movies to switch between for Halloween nights now!
Did you/your family dress up for Halloween? How’d your night go? 😁
